All the wood I use in any project is dried to 10% moisture content or less before priming and staining with two coats . That's the key to a long lasting protective finish.
For maintenance free decking we build with Trex and use invisible fasteners
I make my overhangs different than anybody else. I don’t use store bought brackets because they look ugly and the bottom of the post can rot if they stay wet for a while. I make my own brackets. I make a bracket that goes all the way around the post so if you wash the patio, it won’t get wet and plus it looks a lot nicer. I cut groves for the top boards because not all the 4 x4s are straight and I use the groves to hold the 4x4s to make them perfectly straight. It’s very hard to straighten a 4x4 eight feet off the ground with no solid floor under you. So I curve the big beams on the lower side to make it look and feel nicer. I make custom trellises for the customers that don’t want a Home Depot look with smaller thinner wood that falls apart because it’s put together with staples. I can customize the trellis for the space with an interesting design and color. I’m always thinking of a better way to make something that will look better and last longer. Nobody wants to pay for the same fence twice. Like they say it’s all in the details.
